Do all the moving parts to a successful voice over career make your head spin?
Well, you came to the right place. Here are my favorite ways to banish voice over worry and help you stay relaxed and focused as you grow your career.
1. Drain The Brain
We often can’t organize our thoughts until we see them clearly in front of us in black and white. Get a couple of pads of paper and get ready to dump the contents of your worried brain onto the page. Without censoring or thinking too much, write down every question or doubt you have about your voice-over career. You’ll be amazed at how clear your head feels after you complete this exercise.
2. See Your Finished Product
Visualize your perfect life in voice-over. What does your typical day look like? What kinds of clients do you serve? Do you have a home studio, and if so, what does it look like? How many hours per day do you work? How much money do you make? This is classic “Law of Attraction” stuff that many people find effective.
3. Break it into bite sized chunks
Let’s say you want to earn $100,000 a year in voice-over, a nice round sum. Divide that amount by 12 months and you get $8,333. Yikes! Did that put you into overwhelm? I thought so. You can visualize $100K as long as its a dreamy goal somewhere in the future, but break it into 12 monthly chunks and suddenly it seems like a goal that’s almost impossible to achieve. Now divide that $8333 by 20 jobs per month (5 jobs per week, 1 job each day) and you’ll see that when you zoom into your goal and take it one business day at a time, you’ll only have to make $416.65 a day, a very attainable amount that doesn’t shock the brain. It’s still the same $100K per year, just broken down into bite-sized chunks.
4. Identify the resources you’ll need to make your dream a reality
Need a demo? A website? Do you have recording equipment? Do you know how to use it? Break each of these items into manageable steps. 5. Create An Action Plan
Get out your calendar and set dates by which you’ll accomplish each of the necessary steps for voice-over success. Review and adjust weekly.
6. Create A Budget
Start saving for large purchases such as training, demo and equipment. Set a goal for the amount you’ll need to save each week. Open a voice-over savings account and arrange for it to be funded by automatic transfer or direct deposit. You’ll meet your goals before you know it!
7. Measure Progress Daily
On a daily basis, many demos will you submit? How many calls must you make and to whom? What are your audition goals? What will you need to give up in order to free up the time to do these things (I hope you’re giving up television and not sleep!)
