the episode where the candidates had to teach a class at the Learning
Annex (an adult learning center). The team I coached, Excel, spoke their
way to a stunning victory. The audience thought they were fun, dynamic

The team I didn’t coach (Capital Edge) was a complete

A very persuasive young woman with a fabulous voice
was somehow able to get the private telephone number of pop star Billy
Joel. She told him she was an up and coming fashion model. Could he help
her with her career? Enchanted, he said yes. They spoke frequently. Joel
sang to her over the phone. He tried to arrange a meeting. She refused.
Why? Because she was really a lonely social worker from Louisiana. And
she didn’t look anything at all like a model.
Sound far-fetched? Not really.
Whenever you have to make an important phone call, even
though you’ve honed your message to perfection, the quality
of your voice (pitch, tone, inflection) counts for a whopping 84%

A manager is speaking to his staff
about some serious productivity issues. Something in his voice makes him
sound light weight, almost like he’s smiling. Because his voice
lacks authority his staff doesn’t believe him and they make fun
of him behind his back.
A talented designer must present her
work to a small group of clients. She becomes so terrified she “clams
up” and cannot speak. Her boss gives her an ultimatum. “Either
learn to present effectively or look for another job.”
A student has to give an oral presentation
for his Master’s degree. When he gets up in front of groups, his
speaking voice is all over the place, sometimes nasal, sometimes breathy,
sometimes hoarse. Bottom line? He’s terrified and afraid to blow
it.
A fund-raiser for a non-profit organization
feels like she’s invisible in meetings. Whenever she tries to make
a point, she can’t seem to get noticed. People talk right over her
and her boss wonders why she’s become such a wall-flower.
A woman and a man meet on-line. They
exchange pictures and many emails. Things are looking promising. But when
the man calls the woman she is instantly turned off by his somewhat high
pitched, nasal-sounding voice. She ends the call as quickly as she can
and she won’t answer his emails. He is stunned and can’t figure
out why.

Many wonderful men and women can’t appreciate
what nature gave them. They think they have to conform to somebody else’s
idea of perfection in order to be OK. This applies to how they look, and
it also applies to how they sound. They adopt a phony voice they think
sounds impressive, but it just isn’t natural. Men squeeze all the
attractive life out of their voices by trying to make them sound deeper
than they really are. Women adopt a phony, sexy sound.
And by the way, I bet you didn’t know that even
though he has an amazing voice, James Earl Jones has a reading disability.
It’s a little known industry secret that when he goes into the recording
studio to lend his famous signature voice to commercials and TV promos
like “This is CNN,” he has to do many, many takes until he
gets it right. It is not easy for him. But he prevailed and became one
of our finest actors.
James Earl Jones has a signature sound that’s

Voice-prints are sometimes used like finger prints in security systems.
That’s how distinctive each voice is!
The secret is not to try to have a voice that’s

I learned this lesson when I worked with radio shock
jock Howard Stern. For several years I was his traffic reporter and a
cast member on his show. I got to see the real Howard, up close and personal.
Howard’s voice is nasal and far from perfect and his style is certainly
