The Most Overlooked Way to be Successful in Voice-over…FINALLY, Someone’s Talking About It

Voice Over Bootcamp, Voice Over General, Voice Over Products No Comments

Let me get right to the point. Most people think a great voice is all you need to become a successful voice-over artist. Or maybe it’s having a great agent or who you know. Some people even think you can become massively successful by selling your voice services on the internet for the lowest possible price (boy, are they wrong!).

These aren’t proven strategies. They’re myths – sure-fire recipes for frustration and failure.I’ve observed that there are 7 “X-Factors” that all successful voice talents share and they have nothing to do with agents, rock-bottom prices or even the sound of your voice.

They are:

  1. The “Fun Factor”: the ability to bring feel-good energy to your clients and prospects
  2. Self-direction know-how
  3.  A proven and tested marketing plan
  4.  Positioning: how to target your marketing for fastest results
  5. Voice control: how to make your voice do what you want
  6. A few easy-to-learn technical skills so you can audition and work from home
  7. An experienced coach who can help you pull it all together so you don’t spin your  wheels and waste your valuable time or money.

Look, to enjoy voice-over success, you need to make this about more than the sound of your voice or your audio gear. Quality, turnaround time and how you communicate what the customer gets when they buy from you are just as important.  How important? Well, knowing how to implement these 7 x-factors will make all the difference between just talking about a successful voice-over career and actually having one.

I’ll be stepping you through everything you need to get started and prosper in voice-over in my next Voice-over Bootcamp at a top New York City recording studio, October 11th-13th, 2008.

And, if you register for the Bootcamp this Wednesday August 27 you’ll get a whopping $500 discount on your investment. Go here now to get all the juicy details http://www.greatvoice.com/bootcamp.asp

We had a terrific Bootcamp in Sausalito, CA, outside of San Francisco
last weekend.  I must admit I love Northern California and beautiful Marin County.

What a thrill it was to cross the Golden Gate Bridge and look back through the

silvery fog at that gorgeous city by the bay. The eucalyptus-scented air was

fresh and cool, the food fantastic, and the vibe relaxed, mellow and very

healing. We spent three days in famous “Studio D”, which is one of the

bay area’s most historic recording studios. There were gold and platinum

records all over the walls, including records by Maria Muldaur and

Huey Lewis and the News, which were recorded there.  Bonnie Raitt

also did some sessions for Maria Muldaur’s latest album there recently.

Studio owner Joel Jaffe and his assistant Matt, made us feel right at home

and we were able to record some incredible demo tracks from all the talent

who joined us. Must have been the spirit of Jerry Garcia in the air!

In Loving Memory of my father Michael Silberkleit, Chairman, Archie Comics

Voice Over Bootcamp, Voice Over General, Voice Over Products 6 Comments

Last night, a few hours before I was about to board the plane for Los Angeles and Voice 2008, my father passed away after a brief battle with cancer. He was the Chairman of Archie Comics, a company co-founded by Grandfather Louis Silberkleit. Here’s a recent picture of my Dad and a picture of my family in 1967. That’s me in yellow next to my sister Amy in green. My father is on the left with my Mom and my Grandfather and Grandmother are on the right.  My brother David is up front.

Susan’s Family        Susan’s Dad

I’m proud that my father always stood firm against violence in children’s media and for the contribution he made to American popular culture through the comic book icons Archie and his friends. Many hearts are heavy today. He will be missed.

I regret that I will be unable to attend Voice 2008, but will be coming to San Francisco as planned for the Voice-over Bootcamp Weekend with Jay Ginsberg and Rodney Saulsberry, August 15th-17th.

Here’s more about my Dad……

Michael I. Silberkleit, the chairman of Archie Comic Publications, died August 5th in New York City at the age of 76, after a short battle with cancer.

For much of the 60 years he worked at Archie Comics, Silberkleit shared the leadership of the company with Richard Goldwater, whose father, John Goldwater, and his partner Louis Silberkleit, Michael’s father, founded the company.

The sons, who began working at the company as boys, later steered Archie Comics into the modern era of publishing as electronic production techniques and brand licensing became important. They encouraged the  development of  new characters, such as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Josie and the Pussycats, and successfully licensed these and other characters through Archie Comics Entertainment. Silberkleit was also Executive consultant to the TV program, Sabrina and the Teenage Witch, a long running series starring Melissa Joan Hart. The company also published comic books as a licensee, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog. At various times Silberkleit was chairman of the Comics Association of America.

The centerpiece identity of the company, which is based in Mamaroneck, N.Y., remains the brightly innocent presence of Archie and his girlfriends Betty and Veronica. Working for the company founders, whose inspiration for Archie came from the Andy Hardy movies, Bob Montana designed the likenesses of the Archie characters who made their comic debut in 1941.

Over the decades Michael Silberkleit and Richard Goldwater steadfastly refused to introduce the more worldly and darker elements of teenage life, like sex and drugs and violence, into the Archie storylines. In doing so they preserved an image of adolescence for the target audience of 7-to-12 year olds.

Silberkleit was determined  to keep Archie,  an American institution ,  pure as childhood yet  up-to-date with the latest technology used by children today. For generations of readers, Archie and the Gang have represented the wonder and magic of  childhood and Silberkleit fought successfully to keep this vision alive.

Unlike some competitors who use longer formats, Archie Comics continues its tradition of telling accessible, short stories. In one of the many interviews Silberkleit gave, he said, “The fact that our stories are funny, are non-violent, believable, clean and appropriate for youngsters makes us so appealing to the younger reader. This philosophy hasn’t changed for more than 60 years. Many parents grew up reading Archie Comics and feel that our comics are appropriate for their kids.”

After an initial public offering in the early 1970s, when Silberkleit served as Treasurer, Archie Comics shares were traded publicly. But after ten years Silberkleit and his partner Goldwater bought the company back from shareholders and held it as a private, family-owned business thereafter.  Currently, the company publishes over 10 million comics per year in a dozen languages worldwide.

Born in New York City in 1932, Silberkleit attended the Fieldston School before going to Albright College as an undergraduate. He studied law after his graduation.

Silberkleit was also active in the community, volunteering as an auxiliary policeman for the Scarsdale Police force.

A resident of Rye and East Hampton, N.Y., Silberkleit indulged his mechanical aptitude with vintage sports cars, spending several years restoring a 1966 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lind Silberkleit and their daughter Alexandria, and by three adult children from a prior marriage to Karen Silberkleit: Susan Berkley, David Silberkleit and Amy Silberkleit, as well as grandchildren Isis and Elijah Shiffer.

A private funeral and memorial service is planned for Sunday, August 10th.  The family asks that, in lieu of flowers or other memorials, donations should be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Research

BOOTCAMP SHAVES ABOUT 20 YEARS OFF THE VOICE-OVER LEARNING CURVE

Voice Over Bootcamp, Voice Over General, Voice Over Products No Comments

” I attended the Bootcamp in NYC in May and had a great time.  There was so much great, practical information and the guest speakers showed the real inside of the industry.  I know I could have picked up all the great hints I got if I didn’t attend the boot camp.  It just would have taken me 20 or 30 years being in the business and making mistakes before learning all the how to’s I got at the boot camp.

I’ve had a very busy schedule this summer but I wanted to let you know that I finally got into the studio and recorded my demo last week.  I took all the advice I got from the Bootcamp and checked my area for resources.  I would have never known what to look for and what questions to ask if not for your suggestions.  Having a little “inside” knowledge allowed me to disqualify the studio that was actually closest and most convenient to me.  It also led me to another studio where I felt comfortable.  By virtue of doing the Bootcamp, I didn’t feel like a rookie when I got there.  I knew the etiquette, terminology and the do’s and don’ts so that the recording process went as smooth as possible.  I actually got out 15 minutes sooner than I expected because we didn’t have to go over the preliminary stuff.  Again, having the experience of actually going into the booth and recording at the Bootcamp made the process of recording my demo familiar and anxiety free.  I was able to take direction and knew what the director was looking for with his suggestions.  When I left the session, the director told me that I had made a really good start.  Certainly I have a lot to learn in the business but I know I am on my way“  CJ Lovett, Providence, RI

The Bootcamp (Oct 11th-13th in NYC) is normally $2497, but on August 27th ONLY, your investment is only $1995 and payment plans are available. So check your schedule and give Jason Davis a call at 800-333-8108 x229 to be placed on the notification list or email jason@greatvoice.com

Voice 2008

I’m rushing around getting ready to leave tomorrow for Los Angeles and Voice 2008, but I wanted to take a minute to write.  I’m so excited and honored that I’ve been asked to deliver the keynote address to over 300 voice talents from all over the world. Cant wait!  My opening keynote is called “5 Reasons Why 2008 is the Best Time to be in Voice-over” and my breakout session on Saturday morning will be “What’s Working Now: How to Double your Voice-over Business in 11 Months or Less”.  I’m also looking forward to meeting many of our Inner Circle members at the event. Members who attend will get a “Great Voice VIP” T-shirts and access to an exclusive closed door Q&A Session with me on Sunday morning. I’ll be featuring the success stories of members Dory Hayman, Moneen Daley Harte, Maxine Dunn, Rob Sciglimpaglia and Michael Turnbull in my keynote. Stay tuned. I’ll be writing more once I get to the show.

How do I get top work from home, if I don’t live in LA or NY?

Voice Over Bootcamp, Voice Over General 1 Comment

The biggest news in voice-over today is that it’s become a global business. You can live and work anywhere, and people do. I have Inner Circle members who live in the mountains of Tennessee, the Massachusetts seashore, the Pacific Northwest, the South, the Midwest, and even members in Hong Kong, London and Rome all doing voice-over from their home studios. I spend 6 weeks every year in Brazil and my clients never know I’m gone. I have an ISDN hookup in Sao Paulo and it’s just like I’m recording in my New Jersey studio. There’s never been a better time to get into voice-over because auditions for “top work” , as you put it, are being sent to talent all over the world, who audition and record from home studios. And, if clients really want to work with you face to face, they’ll pay for your travel. Maryland based Inner Circle member Dory Hayman was just booked for a big job for Yahoo and they paid for her to come up to New York City to record…twice!  They found her online through an internet casting service. She didn’t even have to audition!  Another friend of mine was flown to a beautiful town in Germany where he spent a week recording . To get in the loop for  these kinds of wonderful opportunities requires the kind of marketing and selling skills I teach in my voice-over Bootcamp and Marketing Mastermind programs.

Melanie visited my blog and asked, “Am I wrong to pass on all those $100.00 telephone answering system jobs”?  I can see where you might be tempted to do so.  After all, if you’re looking to make voice-over into a full-time career and not just a way to make gas money, it might seem like a small $100 job is hardly worth the effort.  But, you’d be wrong because you are overlooking the amazing power of lifetime customer value and referrals. Several years ago I did a short phone system job recording for a Fortune 100 company that paid a couple of hundred bucks. Nothing special. Nothing to write home about. However, the customer liked me and kept coming back for more. They’ve been my customer for over 10 years now. Recently, I looked them up in my accounting program and nearly fell off my chair. That same customer had a lifetime value of over a million dollars, and it all started with a small job that only paid a couple of hundred bucks! So yes, you are wrong to pass on those small phone system jobs and even if that $100 customer never comes back for more, they might be able to refer you to others who will, but only if you have a strong referral program. I’ll be telling you exactly how to do this in my upcoming Secrets of The Masters Bootcamp August 14th-16th, 2008. Details here: http://www.greatvoice.com/bootcamp.asp
