Best Voice Over Warm Ups

Best Voice Over Warm Ups

I didn’t think it would ever happen to me.

I’ve always taken great care of my voice. I don’t smoke, don’t drink, don’t yell. I drink lots of water and I eat vegetarian.

Yet a few months ago I started to get hoarse.

Not so bad that I couldn’t teach or do my voice over work, but bad enough that it was noticeable by the end of the day.

Needless to say, I freaked out and rushed to the best voice doctor I could find.

The diagnosis? Fortunately, nothing serious.

Just a harmless little bump on one of my vocal folds that will go away in time.

Apparently I’ve been misusing my voice.

I have to avoid certain foods like onions and caffeine, raise the humidity, watch my vocal volume and be very diligent about warming up my voice.

I’m in good company.

Before the actor Clark Gable became a superstar, he spent years in intensive voice training. He managed to lower his naturally high-pitched voice with better posture, body control, and breathing.

Eventually, in Gone With the Wind, he spoke Hollywood’s most famous words in a beautiful baritone: “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Well I do give a damn about you and the health of your voice so in this week’s Inside Voice Over video training I’ll share some of those vocal warm ups I’ve been doing lately.

Here’s what Bootcamp grad Agnus Gunn had to say about the experience:

“I participated in one of The Great Voice Company’s weekend Voice over Boot Camps at the end of 2016. The experience was fantastic. It persuaded me that this voice over dream that I’ve wondered about for so many years could indeed become a reality.. You emerge with a clear road map for advancing your voice over career. It’s up to you what you do with that toolbox but the Boot Camp definitely equips you with everything you need. All of this is somehow achieved in the span of a thoroughly enjoyable long weekend. Considering the quality and extent of the instruction, the Boot Camp is a bargain. 1. I need ALLLLLLL the help I can get, so thanks for all you do to help those of us who are struggling to get our VO career off the launch pad!! Not that I am even ON the launch pad yet!!! :-/

  2. Thanks! As a singer, I know how crucial it is to warm up. As I know you too are getting musical, a warmup I have used for years (first on cassette, then on CD, and it’s probably a download by now) is by Buddy Mix called The Vocal Zone where he “vocalcizes”. Just an FYI πŸ‘ΈπŸ»

  3. Hi Susan. Glad to hear it was nothing serious and that you are on the mend. Thanks for the great, actionable advice. Any additional voice exercises would be greatly appreciated.
