Top 7 ways to get rid of mouth noise

Aaargh! Mouth noise.

It’s the curse of every voice talent.

You record your best takes, listen to the playback and there they are-crackles, slurps and clicks.

Don’t think your potential clients won’t notice. They do. Bad mouth noise can completely blow an audition.

Voice buyers know it takes valuable time for the recording engineer to get rid of mouth noise and it’s just not professional. They’ll probably move on to someone else.

There is a piece of software called, a de-crackler, that will remove mouth noise, but it’s very expensive. It’s better and more cost effective to treat the problem at the source- your mouth!

In today’s Inside Voice Over video training I share my top 7 ways for reducing mouth noise so you can sound your best behind the mic. Give them a try and let me know what you think…

  1. If you are a serious voice over talent the choice of foods and usage of medications is a given. The placement of the microphone is, however, a more practical application and aid in achieving a better end result.
As always, Susan, your tips are well-founded and appreciated.
    Thank you.

  2. Great info, Thanks Susan.
I’m continually amazed at how much detail high quality mics can pic up.
Avoiding a grumbling stomach is a key for me…so I need to be conscious of what I eat and drink before sessions.
Every week I look forward to your tips and hints.
    Thanks very much!

  3. That was helpful about the mouth noise Or Dry mouth pleague me and Dairy products forget it. That just causes me clear the throat and feel that ball of phlegme in the throat.
With the mic I usually talk just below the microphone even with the foam windscreen on.
Thanks Susan, I watch all Your videos and have gone back over some of the ones posted on youtube.
I would love to attend your voiceover bootcamp but right now money is so tight I squeak when I walk.
    Bye bye

  4. Hi Susan, as someone who does take a lot of medications, I use an over the counter solution called: Biotene. It works wonders and lasts quite a while.

Thanks for the tips, see you in a week.

  5. Good tips, Susan, except for the mouthwash. You really should have found out the name of it before recording the video.
